International Folklore Festivals

Folklore festivals have become an unseparated part of the world cultural life, increasing the understanding between nations, serving peace and enriching the world outlook. Every year numerous international folklore festivals take place all over the world. Already under the CIOFF® aegis only, there take place about 400 festivals on all continents. The organizers of the festivals have a right to decide, which fields of folklore are presented at the festival in which form. There are mainly represented folk dance, folk song, folk music and handicraft. Three presentation forms of folkloristic material are distinguished: authentic (A), elaborated (E) and stylized (S).   The only festival which takes place under the aegis of CIOFF® in the Baltic states is The International Folklore Festival BALTICA, which propagates the authentic forms of folklore. The aims of the BALTICA festival proceed from the ideology of the Baltic folklore movement ideology: to maintain, revive and develop the traditions of regional traditional culture and to promote contacts with other nations. The aim of the organizers is to introduce and propagate folk songs, -dances and –instrumental music, as well as national costums and handicraft in their historical forms. The audience is given an opportunity to actively participate – to sing and dance with the performers. BALTICA is the result of the folklore movement as a continuous process, which comprises schooling, consultancy, but also local events. BALTICA festivals take place every year in turns in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia since 1987. BALTICA festivals have gained recognition and popularity in the world due to the aim at authenticity and the originality of the program, revealed in the organization of Rural days.
